All employees are extremely proud, especially Heinz Burghard, the head of the mechanical assembly department, who was previously involved in the production of the first sealing robot.

In 1981, the former company Lenhardt Maschinenbau GmbH (now Bystronic Lenhardt GmbH) developed and manufactured the first sealing robot. With the development of the first test machine, it was initially tested for 9 months before being sold to the first customer, Bischoff in Bretten (Germany). Then the first customers pre-arranged for themselves to evaluate the new machine. "Our long-time customer Flachglas Wernberg (Germany) provided us with preliminary design suggestions for the nozzle shape," recalls Heinz Burghard.

The employees of Flachglas Wernberg proposed to Karl Lenhardt, then managing director, to develop a circular nozzle instead of an immersion nozzle. Facts have proved that this is a decisive factor in significantly improving the quality of the sealing process. "Subsequently, the first global sales of the sealing robot followed closely," Heinz Burghard said.

For Karl Lenhardt and his passionate team, the imprint on the glass of the chain conveyor used at the time was a thorn in their eyes. After several attempts to use alternative conveying solutions, V-belt technology was introduced. With this system, only the edge of the glass is located on the V-belt, so neither the glass surface nor the sealing material comes into contact with the belt. "At the time, I was stunned by this absurd design. But as a result, everyone understood that this was the only way to achieve a perfect seal," Heinz Burghard explained with a smile.

The following years have witnessed many new developments and advancements. Without these, today's Bystronic glass top model speed'sealer would not have become the best sealing robot on the market.

In 1998, in order to save the long waiting time between the dosing of the sealing material and the insulating glass unit to be sealed, the gear pump dosing system was introduced. Here, the dispensing device is directly connected to the sealing head, thereby generating an accurate dosage of the sealing material.

"We have always wanted to be one step ahead and adjusted the sealing machine accordingly to always meet market demand," said Heinz Burghard. After the sealing robot was able to seal the molded insulating glass unit, it was exhibited at the glasstec trade show in 2000 and was equipped with a conveyor belt for the 4-sided stepped insulating glass unit for the first time.

The market is rapidly developing towards large glass curtain walls and curtain walls sealed with silica gel. “We had to react quickly and developed a manual system for different sealing materials; however, this required more investment from the customer. Therefore, the manual system was quickly replaced by an automatic material change system,” commented Heinz Burghard.

"In addition, our customers have put forward more requirements for a faster mixing system form. This is why Bystronic glass continues to develop a dynamic mixing system that has significantly higher performance compared to previously known static mixing systems. The flow rate will eventually seal the IG unit faster.”

Both systems were first introduced in the form of speed'sealer on glasstec 2010.

speed'sealer is a high-speed sealing robot. The three-layer insulated glass unit can seal two wheels without changing nozzles or shutting down. The speed'sealer is highly accurate and can immediately adapt to changes in seam depth. Its self-monitoring system always ensures that the mixing ratio of the two material components is constant.

"Speed'sealer is a great machine. I can hardly imagine the future development direction of the sealing robot. We have implemented and achieved a lot of achievements. I am proud that I have participated in this story from the beginning, even today, I Still working on assembling the speed "sealing machine", Heinz Burghard concludes.
