After the 2022 Subaru Solterra debuted in the Japanese domestic market last week, it was officially unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Solterra, derived from the Latin words "sun" and "earth", is Subaru's first global electric car based on a similar architecture to Toyota bZ4X.

Like all Subaru models (except BRZ), Solterra has standard symmetrical all-wheel drive provided by two electric motors. Each 80 kW electric motor can produce 107 horsepower, with a total output of 215 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor draws energy from the 71.4 kWh battery pack, enough to maintain an estimated range of 220 miles (354 kilometers).

To be sure, Solterra's range is comparable to other products such as Volvo CX40 Recharge (223 miles), Nissan Leaf Plus (226 miles) or Audi e-tron (222 miles), although we are eager for more reports based on the initial situation. Solterra can be equipped with single-motor and front-wheel drive in Japan, which is sufficient to provide 330 miles of cruising range (285 miles for dual-motor AWD models) according to the Japanese test cycle.

At the same time, American Solterras with AWD also received Subaru's electric version of X-Mode to provide better traction and handling on rugged or loose surfaces. It also has grip control with ramp up and ramp down assist functions. Solterra is not a hardcore electric off-road machine. But like all Subaru (again, except for BRZ), Solterra will not feel like a fish out of water when dealing with rough terrain. In addition, Solterra provides up to 8.3 inches of ground clearance.

Practicality is also a strength of Solterra. The spacious cabin provides a spacious accommodation environment for five passengers. At the same time, its 112.2-inch wheelbase provides plenty of legroom for the front and second rows, which can generate up to 126 cubic feet of passenger and cargo space. It has 60/40 foldable rear seats, allowing you to unobstructed access to 30 cubic feet of cargo space, and has a wider 41.3-inch open lift door and a lower lift height for easy loading and unloading of your valuables goods.

The standard equipment list includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphone app connections, and available wireless charging docks. The list of options includes a 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen, a 360-degree surround view camera and a panoramic glass roof. Of course, Solterra has standard Subaru EyeSight driver assistance technology, including blind spot monitoring, lane change assistance, rear intersection warning, parking support, and high beam assistance.

The 2022 Subaru Solterra will go on sale as a 2023 model next year. Subaru will announce pricing, trim and other specifications at a later date. 2022 Subaru Solterra Gallery
