Apple began retailing a special polishing cloth for any Apple display, including nano-textured glass.

Liam Tung is an Australian business technology journalist who lives a few miles north of Stockholm. He received a Bachelor of Economics and Arts (Cultural Studies) from Macquarie University in Sydney, but he was hacked (no Norwegian or malicious code) during his career as a corporate technology, security and telecommunications reporter at ZDNet Australia.

If you were to pay more than US$1,000 for the iPhone or US$6,000 for a new Mac, would the purchase of an Apple-specific polishing cloth for cleaning the screen cost an additional US$19?

After the large-scale "Unleashed" event, Apple began offering Apple-branded "Polishing Cloth", where new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros, new Apple Silicon M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, and new AirPods were introduced.

Although this fabric was not exhibited at the conference, its $19 price tag attracted the attention of many technology observers and became the subject of many jokes.

However, when cleaning the screen on Apple devices, Apple does have quite strict recommendations. They can only be cleaned with a "soft lint-free cloth", never with paper towels or emery cloth.

Apple cloth with the Apple logo at the corner meets this requirement, including nano-textured glass.

"The polishing cloth is made of a soft, non-abrasive material that can safely and effectively clean any Apple display, including nano-textured glass," Apple said on the product page.

Although the price of cloth is ridiculed, it can play a role. Apple includes an Apple-branded black cloth, a $6,000 Apple Pro Display XDR and an iMac with a nano-textured glass screen. It is recommended to use only the cloth provided by Apple to clean the screens of these computers. So far, the fabric can only be changed by contacting Apple support. Now everyone can buy one individually, even those who have purchased Apple devices for less than $6,000.

Apple's polishing cloth "compatibility" list includes iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, iPod, and Pro Display XDR. In other words, every Apple device with a screen.

Apple polishing cloth can be a waterproof spray at the retail checkout of footwear. A large part of consumers, who just spent $150 on new shoes, will eventually buy sprays to protect their shiny new shoes.

Now at least Apple does not have to instruct customers to provide support staff for Apple fabric replacement.
